Modern Fireplace / July 19, 2018 / Jasmine Herrington.
In designing contemporary fireplaces, the project commences with a basic design concept. Then a simple measured image is drawn up, which then is transformed into a life-size representation that permits a more detailed look at the moldings and the carving details so that more minute dimensions can be determined. After all of this information is ascertained, the details are sent to a stone mill, and the materials are ordered (10-ton blocks are commonly ordered as a starter piece, but each project will require something different).
A fireplace needs no introduction to people who have experienced cold weather. However, not everyone manages to go beyond the traditional, smoky wood burning fireplace. It would be a great contribution towards the worlds' biggest problem of global warming to seek other options for a fireplace. Luckily, the electric fireplace was born eliminating all environmental hazards and providing the service of a traditional fireplace.
In the end the fireplace is installed by a stone mason, who will connect the carved piece or pieces directly to the wall with specialized galvanized wall ties. The shaped stone pieces are usually connected together with bronze pins, the gaps filled in with mortar, and finally sealed with grout material. The whole process can take many days to complete, but the result is a magnificent custom modern fireplace with a distinctive style.
While fireplaces accentuate the largeness of a room, the rooms do not all come in one size. For smaller rooms, like a child's bedroom, fireplaces were sometimes built in the corner of the room to exploit the space there. In fact, it is now easier to install a new fire place in the corner of a room because the fireplace walls could be tapered exactly just so in order to reflect the heat more efficiently into the room.
